REPAIR personnel are mainly female due to the necessities involved with the [[RM Nanomachines|REPAIR Multipurpose (RM) Nanomachines]] that are used to resist Machina infection. Potential conscripts are scouted using mandatory population-wide testing for RM compatibility. Due to the necessity of the RM Nanomachines for protection of personnel from [[M2 Nanomachines]], RM compatibility heavily influences the prospects of a conscript's service. Once conscripted and properly indoctrinated, REPAIR personnel are assigned their positions and tasks within REPAIR's hierarchy. When a member of REPAIR is assigned a new position they are augmented in accordance with the needs of the new position, becoming more augmented as they advance. From this, the member's Rank is established.There is a very-high-importance project within REPAIR called the Biological Overhaul Initiative, which developed the Fractional Enhancement Method to alter males to such an extent that they can safely be augmented with RM Nanomachines and possibly become Agents. It is commonly referred to as Project FEMBOI, and at this stage only a very small handful of males have been successfully treated by these custom-tailored, highly-experimental procedures being developed by the program for each experimental subject. The successful experiments result in male REPAIR personnel who are sufficiently 'female' enough in terms of their body chemistry and other factors, which prevents the RM Nanomachines within them from malfunctioning.
