Once a Machina has completed development by reaching Category 3, she enters into a growth cycle where she must adapt to new sources of stress until she can withstand the application of a new Larva to her body. Once a Larva is applied, she must again build up strength through adaptation until she can apply another one to her body. When Larvae are applied to a Machina, they can empower an existing organ, such as the penis for more forceful ejaculations or the womb to speed up Larvae production, they can form redundant organs and help the Machina improve their output or withstand damage, they can form the basis of new organs such as testicles and tentacles, or they can form the core of a new piece of equipment as outlined above. Breeder-class Machina often decide when a Machina is ready for another Larva and assist with bonding it to the Machina's body.

When a Machina bonds with a Larva, that Larva becomes a permanent part of the Machina's body, including the nervous system. Larvae will provide the necessary calculations for operating a part of the Machina's body, such as the mass-reactor in her Core or operating a weapon system that is part of her equipment. The Larvae have a very simple mind, but can think for themselves. They send feelings of 'alert', 'calm', 'worry', etc, rather than talk to their host. Larvae will often assist their host in searching for and identifying others. Should the Larvae eyes on a Machina's body find a new person, they consult the Machina's subconscious knowledge to determine what defines a 'friend' and 'foe'. The Larvae will then send the feelings of 'alert' to the Machina's mind, as well as the knowledge of the person they have identified and where they are in relation to the Machina. Larvae operate the weaponry of a Machina in this way. They search the Machina's mind for definitions of what is an enemy, then calculate firing solutions based on the Machina's intentions.

そして、幼虫はマキナの心に「警戒」の感情を送り、また、特定した人物がマキナに対してどのような位置にいるのかという知識を与える。
幼虫はこのようにしてマキナの兵器を操作する。幼虫はマキナの頭の中にある「敵の定義」を探り、マキナの意図に基づき射撃方法を計算する。
